‘Getting you to your First Day’

Following the success of a previous commercial project, Wes and I wanted to create something purely for ourselves. A piece that challenged our creative abilities and showcased the kind of storytelling and production work we were capable of delivering. Inspired by the emotional tone often seen in LinkedIn campaigns, we set out to create a spec advert centred around the journey towards a first day in a new role.

Client: Self produced

Director: Wesley Roskell

My roles: Creative, 1st AD, Editor, VFX & Producer

Deliverables: Hero Advert

The project began as a simple question: how could we capture the mixture of nerves, anticipation, and excitement that comes with finding a new job?

Together, we developed the concept, wrote the script, and planned every stage of production. As a self-initiated project, it gave us the freedom to push ourselves creatively while maintaining complete control over the final outcome.

We assembled a small crew and filmed across four locations over two days, transforming familiar spaces into believable story moments. Alongside production planning, I developed lighting plans and storyboards to help ensure the visual style matched the emotional tone of the script.

The edit proved more challenging than expected, and after initially stepping away from the project for a short period, we returned with fresh eyes. Once the music, pacing, and graphics came together, the story really found its rhythm and became the piece we had originally envisioned.

About

What I Enjoyed

There's something incredibly rewarding about taking an idea from a blank page through to a finished film.

I particularly enjoyed the creative development process, refining the concept, planning the visuals and then watching the entire production come together through the efforts of a talented team. Projects like this are a great reminder of why I enjoy filmmaking in the first place.
